Texting is a means of communication which is done by sending short messages via cell phones, pagers or any other handheld devices. Texting by using cell phones or smart phones is popularly used now a days and even in workplace as a means of communication. With this popularity of texting, many questions regarding privacy, work place policies and employee productivity has been raised.
Turachetti (2014) writes on her article on how texting in workplace could damage your business that when it comes to employees texting, each business owner has to decide what’s right for their own company. Texting could be useful for companies to update people on regular basis on basic things but if employees are involved in driving company vehicles or operating heavy machinery, it is not a very good idea to allow texting at work. And Texting could benefit in finding out answers very fast as people tend to reply text messages faster than emails. This could help increase the productivity on one side but on the other side it could lose productivity. Employees could spend long time on texting with friends than do their work.
Turachetti (2014) also writes that Jesse Gaddis, CEO and founder of Bedford Slims, a manufacturer of electronic cigarettes, says the “texting on the job” issue is something every business owner faces, and he, for one, has decided to embrace the nature of this type of communication. Although texting could have serious implications on business about privacy and productivity, at the end it depends on how companies regulate the policies about texting and trust their employees.
Texting has both good and bad impact on workplace but employers have to decide what is right for their company with younger generations who prefer texting, a fast means of communication, entering the workforce day by day in a very large amount.
